Mark joined Fairfield Primary School as a class teacher in 1996 and throughout his career and length of time at Fairfield, has taught in both KS1 & 2 as well as taking on a breadth and range of leadership roles. His particular love of sport has had an impact, not only on the increased participation in sporting events at the school, but on the successes of teams at Fairfield he has coached and supported.
In 2009 he was appointed Deputy Head teacher and following the retirement of the then head teacher, co-led the school through a successful OFSTED Inspection in 2010. He has since successfully achieved NPQH (National Professional Qualification of Headship) and in Jan 2015, began working alongside Tim Sutcliffe (Executive Head) as Head of School.
The school, under the new leadership structure and work across the Trust, has enabled the school to move from strength to strength. The school is a very popular choice for parents in the community and his work to engage and deal effectively with children & parents has supported this. The attainment and progress of children in core areas of learning has risen significantly over the past 4 years with children typically coming into FS below or significantly below national, and leaving in Year 6 at/above national, and in some areas well above national. This has been a focus of his work to ensure effective development plans and targeted approaches are established and monitored closely. The school’s Phonic screening results have also risen year on year since 2015, with 97% of pupils achieving expected in 2018.
In June 2016, OFSTED recognised the school had gone through a period of underachievement and that since January 2015, “the school (had) undergone significant improvements”. He has been proud to develop a fantastic team of staff at Fairfield and encourages, guides and leads them to strive for even better outcomes for the pupils at Fairfield. The school is a “happy, positive place to learn and work”, where “pupils enjoy their learning and behave well”. In September 2019, Mark became Head Teacher at Fairfield.
Ofsted graded Fairfiled as 'Good' again in September 2021.
